Sega Celebrates Sonic the Hedgehog’s Birthday With a New Sonic Central

Wondering what’s in store for Sonic the Hedgehog? Sega is putting on a new Sonic Central this Friday.

Don’t count on seeing any new games, we’ve already had a new 2D Sonic revealed at Summer Game Fest. Instead, this Sonic Central will celebrate the fact that Sonic is now 32 years old. Technically, anyway – his first game came out in 1992. His actual in-universe age is up for grabs.

Also, it’ll offer a glimpse of some non-gaming related Sonic things. According to Sega, it’ll feature “some our upcoming projects, partnerships and events happening in 2023.” So what could that mean?

The third Sonic movie hasn’t started filming yet, so don’t count on seeing anything from that. However, the Knuckles spin-off series is underway so we could see a scrap of footage from that.

We also expect Sega to reveal a handful of new Sonic merchandise items. We’ve got our fingers crossed on a Sonic the Hedgehog/Like a Dragon crossover statue, but that’s just us. What we do know is that there are four new LEGO Sonic sets coming in August, so those will probably be on show.

Game-wise, there may not be any new games but we could get more footage of Sonic Superstars. And now that Sonic Origins Plus is out, complete with several Game Gear Sonic games, it stands to reason Sega would choose to highlight that.

You can watch this new Sonic Central via YouTube or Twitch. It’ll take place this Friday 23rd June at 8:00 AM PST, 11:00 AM EST, 4:00 PM BST.

Weekend Editor // Chris has been gaming since the days of the Acorn Electron, which was allegedly purchased to 'help him with his homework'. You can probably guess how well that went. He’ll tackle most genres – football titles aside – though he has a taste for games that that are post-apocalyptic, horror-oriented or thought provoking in nature.
