What is Today’s Wordle Answer? 18 August

Games like Wordle

For over a year now, our lives at midnight every night have revolved around Wordle. Wordle, in a nutshell, is a daily word game that you play in your browser. You get six attempts to correctly guess a five-letter word. Each guess will hopefully help you get closer to the answer, and if you’re on the ball, you’ll get the right answer way before guess six. But sometimes, finding the Wordle answer isn’t that easy. And that’s where we come in.

Originally created by Josh Wardle (Wardle, Wordle, get it?) as a gift for his girlfriend, the browser game quickly caught fire and spread across the internet. In 2022 it was acquired by the New York Times, and now it is played by hundreds of thousands of people every day.

Read on to find the answer to today’s Wordle on 18 August.

How to play Wordle

You can play Wordle by heading to the New York Times website. There’s no need to log in or create an account: this is free to play right in your browser. Score!

There’s a new game of Wordle every day, changing over at midnight local time. As we’ve said above, you’ll get six attempts to guess a five-letter word. It’ll be a valid word that’s in the dictionary, and each guess you make will need to be a valid word too. You can’t just put in a string of vowels, for instance, to see which appear.

For each guess that you make, correctly-placed letters will be marked in green. Letters that are in the answer but in a different position will be marked in yellow. If a letter has no colour, you know that’s not part of the final word.  (Your colour display may be different depending on your phone’s settings.)

Easy, right? In principle, yes! But sometimes, coming up with the Wordle answer can be tricky.

Tips for playing Wordle

Need a little help to try to solve Wordle yourself before you look on for today’s answer? Good on you. Here’s a few tips to help you out.

  • Find a good starting word. We use two: STERN and AUDIO, as they cover all vowels and several of the most common consonants. You can use whatever word you like, but a good one will have at least three vowels in and a couple of heavily-used consonants.
  • Take your time. Wordle has no time, and so there’s no rush to come up with an answer. You can always leave it for a while and go back to it with fresh eyes.
  • Use a notepad. Jot down some notes and play around with potential letter formations. It helps us to think when we have a pen and paper in hand.
