This New Mortal Kombat 1 Trailer is Giving Us The Good Place Vibes

Mortal Kombat 1 Keepers of Time Trailer

Mortal Kombat 1 has a new Keepers of Time trailer and it’s got us thinking about The Good Place.

That might seem like a bit of a leap. One is a hyper-violent beat-em-up, the other is a fantasy comedy about the afterlife. But one revelation, featured in the Mortal Kombat 1 Keepers of Time trailer, has us wondering if Liu Kang is going to go a bit Ted Danson.

The trailer reveals that Fire God Liu Kang has access to The Hourglass, the device he used to recreate the world after the events of Mortal Kombat 11. It’s guarded by Geras, who is also a playable fighter in this upcoming soft reboot. And, unlike his MK11 self, he seems to be on good terms with Liu Kang.

But that’s got us thinking. How do we know this is Liu Kang’s first attempt at rebooting the world? He’s trying to create a “vision of peace” as Geras puts it. And, even if this is his first attempt, whose to say it’ll be the last?

It’s got us thinking of The Good Place where Ted Danson’s Michael kept rebooting his perfect neighbourhood. By the time events overtook him, he’d done it over eight hundred times and was a complete wreck.

We’ve been assuming that, going forward, MK1’s world is the “new” continuity. But what if it’s not? What if the game ends with an increasingly exasperated Liu Kang recreating the world again.. and again. and again?

Each future Mortal Kombat game could offer different take on the original’s story and characters. We’ve already seen a handful of “what if” outfits, such as Kold War Scorpion and Scarlet, which popped up in Mortal Kombat Mobile.

We absolutely wanted to see every one of The Good Place’s neighbourhood reboots and, in the same way, we’re definitely on board with each MK game rewriting series lore or translating it to a different setting.

Steampunk Mortal Kombat? Mortal Kombat on Mars? A Mortal Kombat where Shang Tsung is Earthrealm’s protector?  Heck, forget deleting the old timelines, just have Liu Kang side-step and give us a whole Mortal Kombat multiverse!

Are we getting carried away? Maybe. Have we been binge-watching The Good Place all over again? Absolutely.  But if is Netherrealm is going to go full multiverse, we’re 100% on board.

We won’t have wait long to find out. Mortal Kombat 1 is just 0.0011 Jeremy Bearimys away, arriving on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S this September 19th. You can also check out our preview here and, if you’ve pre-ordered, get in on the game’s mid-August beta.

Weekend Editor // Chris has been gaming since the days of the Acorn Electron, which was allegedly purchased to 'help him with his homework'. You can probably guess how well that went. He’ll tackle most genres – football titles aside – though he has a taste for games that that are post-apocalyptic, horror-oriented or thought provoking in nature.
