The Best Single-Player Games on PS4

God of War

Looking for the best single-player games on PS4? We’ve got you covered right here. While it’s nice to be able to play games online with friends either co-operatively or competitively, often you just want to immerse yourself in a game’s world without any distractions. For that, there’s nothing better than a great single-player game. Luckily for you, the PS4 is home to some of the best of them. A lot of them are fairly cheap to pick up now, too.

With so many single-player games on PS4 to choose from, we’ve put together a list of what we consider to be the best of them. Some of them have online features, sure, but none of them require you to interact with another real life person to actually appreciate what they have to offer. And that’s just how we like it. Each and every one of these will provide you with hours of single-player bliss. These are the best single-player games on PS4. Enjoy!

This list was first published in 2018 and has been periodically updated since.

1. The Last of Us Part II

When The Last of Us was released on PS3, it blew us away with its story and brutal combat. The Last of Us Part II makes it seem like child’s play now though. This is one of the best games ever made, never mind one of the best single-player games on PS4. Continuing Joel’s and Ellie’s exploits in what is essentially a post apocalyptic world, if you have a PS4, you should consider this a must-have.

2. God of War Ragnarok

God of War Ragnarok Review Screenshot_04

God of War Ragnarok is undoubtedly better on PlayStation 5, granted. But we can say that about a lot of games now. The PS4 is still a very capable console, though, and if you haven’t yet upgraded, you shouldn’t miss out on playing the latest instalment into the God of War franchise. The original is still one of the best single-player games on PS4 – you’ll find it further down this list, in fact. But its sequel is bigger and better in just about every way, expanding Kratos and Atreus’ story in truly meaningful ways.

3. Final Fantasy VII Remake

Final Fantasy VII Remake 2 (1)

There’s no arguing that Final Fantasy VII is one of the most-loved games of the series. Perhaps nothing will ever replace the original, but Final Fantasy VII Remake does a fantastic job of bringing the epic adventure to a modern audience. Whether or not you’ve played the 1997 classic, you’re going to love this if you’re a fan of epic RPGs. And if you have played the original, the clever way it plays with the story will keep you on your toes.

4. Horizon Forbidden West

Horizon Forbidden West Photo mode 20220128192055

The sequel to Aloy’s adventures in Horizon Zero Dawn, Horizon Forbidden West is another PlayStation exclusive that takes things to the next level. Just like God of War Ragnarok, it’s bigger and better than its predecessor in just about every way, giving Aloy a new world to explore, new enemies to take down and new friends to meet. Sure, the story is a little convoluted, but that won’t get in the way of your epic adventures. It looks fantastic, too: good luck pulling yourself away from photo mode.

5. Hades

If you’re a fan of roguelike games, then Hades is the single-player game for you. Sure, it might not be quite as epic in scale as some of the other games on this list, primarily down to its roguelike nature. But with edge-of-your-seat action and a mythological story about the underworld that leaves you hungry for more, we just can’t get enough. It looks absolutely fantastic, too.

6. Resident Evil 2

Resident Evil 2

We could have picked any modern Resident Evil game to go in this slot, really. The latest remake of Resident Evil 4 is brilliant, and 3 was pretty good too. BUt we have a soft spot for Resident Evil 2, which both captures the creepy nostalgia of the original while managing to be a truly wonderful modern horror experience. If you fondly remember the original Resident Evil games, this re-imagining of Resident Evil 2 is an absolute must. It might even be the best Resident Evil game there is. Even better, there are no multiplayer elements whatsoever – just single-player PS4 goodness.

7. Marvel’s Spider-Man

Is Marvel’s Spider-Man the best superhero game ever made? Quite possibly. Its standalone expansion, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, is equally good though. Take control of Spider-Man and thwart the machinations of dastardly villains in this brilliant open-world adventure, which is fun even if you’re not particularly a fan of superhero games. If you love everything Marvel, however, and want clean, safe fun while wearing a skin-tight suit, Spider-Man is a must-have.

8. Control

Control 1 (1)

Has Remedy ever made a bad game? No is the answer. At least, not yet. Control shows once again that Remedy is the master when it comes to story-driven third-person shooters. Placing players in control of Jesse Faden, a woman entering the Federal Bureau of Control in the hope of finding and freeing her brother, Control mixes high-octane third-person action with plenty of exploration. With a riveting story and glorious visuals, you simply need to play Control if you’re after the best single-player games on PS4.

9. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order 1

Its sequel, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor might be next-gen only, but if you’re yet to experience Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, you’re in for a treat. It’s the game Star Wars fans had been waiting on for years, allowing you to become a Jedi and travel to some of the most iconic planets within the Star Wars universe. And of course, there are dark forces at work, trying to hunt you down due to your powers and what you stand for. The combat is energetic, though it makes you work for victory, and thanks to its brilliant presentation you really do feel like you’re the star in the latest Star Wars movie. Even though Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order has some minor issues, it’s an epic single-player adventure that you don’t want to miss out on.

10. DOOM Eternal

DOOM Eternal 6 (1)

Okay, so DOOM Eternal does have multiplayer in the form of Battlemode, but its single-player campaign really is the reason to buy it. It’s huge, and there’s so much replayability. If you want more after the campaign is done, there are now two story expansions available too, offering even more fast-paced single-player FPS fun. Be warned that they’re very challenging though. Needless to say, DOOM Eternal is a single-player game at heart, and currently one of the best available on PS4.

11. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

Assassin's Creed Valhalla

There are many, many Assassin’s Creed games available, each and every one of them an enticing prospect. The most recent, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, is undoubtedly the best of them all though. Letting you journey back to the age of the Vikings, you’ll take control of Eivor as they live their life trying to settle in England. Though of course, nothing is ever simple, and they’ll soon find themselves caught up in events they could have never imagined. As well as being one of the best single-players games on PS4, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is also one of the largest – be sure to put aside nearly one hundred hours for this one.

12. Days Gone

Days Gone

Thanks to its brilliant story and tense zombie-battling action, we really liked Days Gone. It takes a while to get going, which can put some players off, but once you’re drawn in there’s no letting go until the credits roll. A highlight is battling against giant hordes of zombies, which require all of your skills and cunning to overcome. Needless to say, if you’re after tens of hours of single-player open-world goodness, consider this one of the best single-player games on PS4.

13. God of War

God of War 3-min

We’ve already had its sequel further up this list, but God of War (2018) still deserves a mention itself. Undoubtedly one of the best PS4 games of all time, this epic has brutal combat and a story that grips you from the outset and never lets go. Needless to say, if you own a PS4, you simply need to play it. It’s a masterpiece – one of the best single-player games there is. And don’t worry if you’ve never played any of the previous God of War games: you don’t lose much by not having played through Kratos’ sordid history.

14. A Plague Tale: Innocence

A single-player story-driven adventure packed with stealth and puzzles, A Plague Tale: Innocence tells the story of Amicia and her little brother Hugo as they battle to survive during the middle ages. It’s not just soldiers and wrongdoers that pose a threat to Amicia and Hugo in A Plague Tale: Innocence, however, but also rats. Sometimes the screen is full of them, eager to bite into our young duo’s flesh. A game filled with heart, A Plague Tale: Innocence’s captivating story will keep PS4 gamers looking for brilliant single-player experiences hooked from start to finish.

15. Yakuza 0

There are many Yakuza games available on PS4 now, but Yakuza 0 still holds a special place in our hearts. Not only is it quite possibly the best Yakuza game ever made, but, being a prequel, it’s also a great entry point for the series. It’s just a shame that playing it makes subsequent numbered entries in the series, most of which are either remakes or remasters, a little less special. Still, as single-player games on PS4 go, Yakuza 0 is undoubtedly one of the best. Join Goro Majima and Kazuma Kiryu on a lengthy single-player adventure filled with violence, laughs and weirdness. We dare you!

16. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The Witcher 3 Achievements

Thanks to its brilliant story and thoroughly engaging side-quests, The Witcher 3 is probably the best single-player action-RPG out there. We’d be silly not to include it on our list, even if it is a little long in the tooth now. It’s the type of game that you sit down to play, get side-tracked by someone who needs your help, and then before you know it hours of passed and you’ve not even made a dent in the main story. So, if you haven’t played it yet and are after the best single-player games on PS4, what are you waiting for? The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is simply essential.
