1. God of War
Many consider God of War to be one of the best games of all time. Well, until its sequel God of War: Ragnarok released, that was. Sadly, Ragnarok isn’t available on PC (yet), but its predecessor is – and it’s still one of the best single-player experiences you can have. And on PC, it looks and performs better than ever before – providing your set-up is up to the task, of course. No matter how you feel about the God of War franchise, you need to play this: it takes Kratos’ story to a whole new level. If you love action adventure games, consider it a must-have.
2. Kena: Bridge of Spirits
Kena: Bridge of Spirits is something rather special. It has the essence of an old-school 3D platformer, but presented with gorgeous visuals to compete with the very best, it really does feel like a cut above the rest. Playing as Kena and accompanied by the adorable Rot, you’ll go out on a journey to rescue lost spirits – and you’ll have an absolute blast as you do. There’s plenty of exploration to be done around a world that looks like it’s ripped from a Pixar movie, and environmental puzzles are juxtaposed with surprisingly challenging combat. Without a doubt this is one of the best single player games on PC; don’t sleep on it.

3. Marvel’s Spider-Man
Here’s another game that started out life as a PlayStation exclusive, but is now available on PC. And if you’re a PC gamer, it’s been well worth the wait – Marvel’s Spider-Man is hands-down one of the best single-player games you can sink your teeth into. Swinging around New York City, jumping from rooftop to rooftop is exhilarating. There’s an excellent story to follow, and you’ll likely get a kick out of the combat, too. And when you’re done with this one, you can jump straight into Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales – a standalone expansion that might be even more enjoyable.

4. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy
Arriving after the ill-received Marvel’s Avengers, we feel like Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy was overlooked by many. The truth is, though, that it’s one of the best Marvel games ever made, and certainly one of the best single-player games available on PC right now. Even if you’re not a huge fan of the Guardians of the Galaxy, you’ll likely enjoy the excellent adventure gameplay, the humour of the story, and the absolutely kick-ass soundtrack.

5. Ghostwire: Tokyo
It might be a bit slow-paced for some, but Ghostwire: Tokyo is a thoroughly unique adventure for those that don’t mind a bit of virtual tourism. This supernatural story follows KK and Akito as they work together to figure out why people in Tokyo are mysteriously disappearing. And did we mention that you can fire projectiles from your hands? Yeah, there’s that, too. You’ll need them to fight against the many ghastly enemies you come up against.

6. Days Gone
We loved Days Gone when it was released on PS4, despite it having quite a few bugs at launch. Now this open world adventure with a story that becomes ever more gripping as you play is available on PC, and as ports go it’s pretty good. It follows the story of biker Deacon as he searches for his missing wife. Along with plenty of zombie-fighting action, some of the biggest hordes of enemies you’ve ever seen, and a huge open world to explore, there’s also a love story at the heart of Days Gone. Aww. So if zombies, the open world genre and romance do it for you, this is one of the best single-player games on PC.
7. Elden Ring
Okay, so perhaps we’re cheating a little with this one: Elden Ring does have multiplayer features, so it’s not completely a single-player experience. You don’t have to use them though, and Elden Ring actually shines when it’s played solo thanks to the introduction of CPU controlled summons. In any case, this is not only one of the best single-player games, but one of the best PC games of all-time. But being the Game of the Year winner at The Game Awards 2022, we’re pretty sure you already know that. Make sure you play it.
8. Hades
The fantastic Hades from Supergiant Games might just be one of the best examples of a roguelike game in recent years. Its gameplay loop is compelling, with excellent combat that’s challenging but never unfair. And with a cast of characters you can’t wait to get to know more about, all with a gripping story to tell, there’s so much to love. It looks fantastic, it plays fantastic, and once you start playing, we’re fairly sure you won’t be able to get enough of it. The best part? There’s a sequel in the works (although it has no release date yet).
9. Alan Wake Remastered
It’s more than ten years old, but thanks to a remastered re-release, Alan Wake is just as impressive as ever. If you enjoy immersive and thrilling single-player games on PC – particularly ones with a hint of the supernatural thrown in – they don’t come much better than this. If you’ve somehow never played it, you’ll take on the role of thriller writer Alan who sets off on a retreat to try to cure his writer’s block. Things soon start going terribly wrong when Alan’s wife gets dragged into a lake, and that’s just the start of Alan’s waking nightmare.

10. Life is Strange: True Colors
If you’re a fan of narrative-driven adventures, Life is Strange: True Colors is one of the best single player games you can play on PC. It’s as simple as that. The latest addition to the Life is Strange series is, in our opinion, the best yet. From its gorgeous visuals and some of the best facial animations we’ve ever seen, to its more grounded story that let us get closer to its colourful cast of characters, we loved every moment we spent in the sleepy town of Haven Springs. 11. Death Stranding
It’s a strange game, Death Stranding, and one that many people will not get on with whatsoever. Those who aren’t put off by its lumbering pace and crazy story, however, will find it to be one of the best single-player games on PC. It sports an incredible soundtrack, some brilliant performances from the likes of Norman Reedus, and some of the best videogame landscape you’ve ever seen. Even better, it looks phenomenal on PC, and if you can make use of DLSS it performs amazingly.

12. Psychonauts 2
16 years after the first Psychonauts game released, it finally has a sequel. Psychonauts 2 is the magic sort of game that both manages to capture the spirit of the original while feeling (mostly) up-to-date and wholly relevant to the modern day. The result is a gorgeous, colourful whirlwind of a platforming adventure, with a touching plot and plenty of laughs along the way. For platforming fans, this is one of the best single-player games on PC. And better yet, if you have Xbox Game Pass for PC, you can play it at no extra cost.

13. Horizon Zero Dawn: Complete Edition
Yes, it’s yet another game that started out life as a PlayStation-exclusive. Horizon Zero Dawn: Complete Edition is one of the best open world games you can jump into as a solo player. Not only is its story utterly compelling, but its world is too: set far into the future where humans have left technology behind, the planet is stalked by gigantic mechanical beasts. Equipped with a bow, protagonist Aloy needs to go up against them – along with uncovering a bigger plot as you progress through the game. There’s a compelling main story and dozens of side quests to keep you busy, and we’re confident you won’t be disappointed.

14. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
Become a Viking and embark upon an epic adventure. That’s what Assassin’s Creed Valhalla allows you to do, and it is glorious. It’s undoubtedly one of the very best single-player games available on PC right now, and perhaps the best Assassin’s Creed game ever made. The downside? You’re going to need well over 100 hours to get the most out of Valhalla, with a ridiculous amount of things to see and do. You will want to do it all though, because its world is beautiful, and protagonist Eivor might just be one of our favourite characters to play as.

15. Cyberpunk 2077
It’s a shame that Cyberpunk 2077‘s performance issues on console ruined its launch somewhat. Because, actually, this open-world first-person game from CD Projekt Red is one of the best single-player games on PC we’ve ever had the pleasure to spend time with. Its story is absolutely captivating, its world is a joy to explore, and its characters are just wonderful. And it stars Keanu Reeves. What more could you possibly want from a game?

16. Final Fantasy VII Remake: Intergrade
Ah, Final Fantasy VII. Originally released in 1997, it’s long-since been one of the best single-player RPGs out there. But it only got better when Square Enix released Final Fantasy VII Remake in 2020. It’s only part one of the story, but with twists and turns aplenty, it’s a must-play for any Final Fantasy fan. It’s also the perfect starting point for anyone who hasn’t played a game in the franchise before. You’ll quickly fall in love with Cloud, Tifa, Barrett and co as you fight to save the world from the crooked Shinra Corporation.

17. A Plague Tale: Innocence
A single-player story-driven adventure packed with stealth and puzzles, A Plague Tale: Innocence tells the story of Amicia and her little brother Hugo as they battle to survive during the middle ages. It’s a game filled with heart, and its captivating story will keep you hooked from start to finish. It also looks really, really nice if your PC is up to the task. If you enjoy it, there’s also a sequel for you to dive into, which is almost as good as the first.

18. Resident Evil 2
If you fondly remember the original Resident Evil games, this re-imagining of Resident Evil 2 is an absolute must. Capcom has done a fantastic job in bringing this horror classic to the modern age, making it more immersive, captivating and downright scary than ever before. The best part of it? There are no multiplayer elements whatsoever. If you’re after the best single-player games on PC, this is definitely one of them.

19. Control
Has Remedy ever made a bad game? Certainly not yet, anyway. The Alan Wake developer soared to new heights with the release of Control, which shows once again that Remedy is the master when it comes to story-driven third-person shooters. This action-packed sci-fi story casts you as Jesse, a woman with powers who must stop a dark, supernatural presence that has taken over the Federal Bureau of Control. It’s the perfect mix of storytelling and action. Plus, it looks fantastic thanks to ray-tracing support – if your graphics card can handle it, of course.
20. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
If you’re a Star Wars fan, then you should consider Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order to be a must-play. This brand new story has been officially made canon, and where else do you get to experience what it’s like to be an actual Jedi? Playing as Cal Kestis, you’ve got quite the fight ahead of you in this epic single-player adventure. But with your little robot buddy by your side, there’s not much you can’t overcome. Plus, if you’ve got a decent PC setup, it looks absolutely phenomenal. Once you’re done with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, you can then jump into its sequel, Survivor, which carries on its story.

21. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
If you’re a fan of classic Castlevania games, then you’re in for a treat with Bloodstained. The spiritual successor to Symphony of the Night, it’s a single-player side-scrolling adventure that’ll get you hooked from start to finish. You’ll quickly fall in love with its characters, and its huge world is a joy to explore. With no new Castlevania game for some years, it’s the best we’re going to get – but we’ll absolutely settle for it.

22. Hitman 3
There’s no doubt about it: Hitman 3 is the best Hitman game yet. If you own Hitman: Season One or Hitman 2, you can even import their levels into it for more murderous fun. You need this if you’re after the best single-player games on PC. You really do. Why? Because playing as Agent 47 has never been so much fun. Not only is this the best-looking game in the franchise by a longshot, it’s also the most inventive, allowing you to tackle missions in new, weird and wonderful ways. We can’t get enough.
23. NieR: Automata
Have you played NieR: Automata yet? You haven’t! Go play it right now. The PC version perhaps isn’t the best, but it’s still very much worth playing. If action RPGs are your thing, you’ll absolutely love it: it puts you in control of an android named 2B as she fights to destroy the powerful machines that have taken over the world. There’s a gripping story afoot, but it’s the fast-paced combat and seriously thrilling battles that will keep you coming back for more.

24. Ori and the Will of the Wisps
One of the most beautiful games ever made, Ori and the Will of the Wisps is a must-play if you’re after the best single-player games on PC. It’s a metroidvania game, but there’s so much more to Ori than exploring and backtracking; not least a seriously emotional story, characters you’ll fall in love with and some challenging and enjoyable combat. Just make sure you have some tissues handy, because it might just make you cry.

25. Kingdom Come: Deliverance
As far as single-player experiences go, Kingdom Come: Deliverance is up there with the best of them. PC is by far the optimal way to play it, too. It offers an absurdly detailed open world for you to explore, which really shines if you have a PC powerful enough to crank settings up to max. With a ridiculous amount of content, some seriously entertaining characters to meet and an enjoyable story to play through, there’s a lot to love here if you’re a fan of huge RPGs.

26. The Evil Within 2
Are you a fan of horror? Do you like making yourself scared? Then The Evil Within 2 is the game for you. Improving on its predecessor in almost every way, we’d have to say it’s one of the best action-horror games available. It has some of the tensest, scariest scenes in video games from recent years, and as you control Sebastian through a journey that only gets more and more twisted, you’ll constantly be on the edge of your seat. You can now play it in first-person, too, making this single-player game even better.

27. Red Dead Redemption 2
We’re cheating again, sorry. While Red Dead Redemption 2 does have a multiplayer mode, its main single-player campaign will take you at least 50 hours or more to complete, so we’re making an exemption. Also, while it looked great on console, on PC it’s mind-blowing if your machine is capable of handling the highest settings. It’s from Grand Theft Auto V developer Rockstar, so you know you’re in for one hell of an experience.

28. Devil May Cry 5
There’s a strange online feature in Devil May Cry 5 that allows you to see other players in the background, but we’re still counting this as a single-player game. Whether or not you’ve played games in the Devil May Cry series before, Devil May Cry 5 should be considered a must-have if you’re a fan of fast-paced action. It has some of the slickest combat you’ll ever encounter, and kicking demon ass has never felt so good.

29. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition
We couldn’t have a list of the best single-player games on PC without including Skyrim now, could we? This huge open-world RPG is perhaps the pinnacle of single-player gaming and although it’s getting a little long in the tooth now, it’s still as strong and popular as ever. It’s been ported to endless other formats, but we think PC is still the best place to play. Why? Well, its visuals stand the test of time, and you can make use of mods. There are thousands of them, allowing you to tailor the experience to completely suit your needs.

30. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is another one of those games that’s considered essential in the single player RPG space. Playing as Geralt of Rivia on an epic quest never gets old, and although we’ve sunk hundreds of hours into it, we could sink hundreds more. Yes, it’s a huge game, and to see and do everything it has to offer, you’re going to need to set aside a lot of time. It’s worth it, though. One of the best games of all time, if you’re looking for the definitive single-player experience on PC, this is it.

31. Dead Space (2023)
One of the best action horror games of all time has been remade, making it even better. Developed by EA Motive, this reimagining of the original Dead Space keeps most of the game intact but brings certain elements up to date and adds more content. Aside from dramatically improved visuals it has a more open structure, allowing you to explore the USG Ishimura at your leisure further into the game. And subtle gameplay tweaks mean that while you have more of a fighting chance against your mutated foes, you’re kept on your feet by their unpredictable nature.

32. Resident Evil 4 (2023)
2023 has been a great year for horror fans, with not only the Dead Space remake above being unleashed, but also a remake of Resident Evil 4. As Leon Kennedy, Resident Evil 4 finds players on a mission to rescue a young woman called Ashley. The reason she’s so important is that she’s the President of the United States’ daughter, but things are going to get much more complicated for Leon when he finds she’s being held by a strange group that have been conducting unusual experiments. While much of the Resident Evil 4 remake remains faithful to the original game, there are some surprising changes. And Mercenaries mode makes a return, adding more reason to return to the game time and time again.

33. The Last of Us Part 1
It’s no secret that The Last of Us Part 1 had a pretty disastrous launch on PC. Thanks to numerous patches, however, it’s now in a much better place. It’s a good thing, too, as this is not only one of the best single-player games on PC, but also simply one of the best games of all time. A remake of the game originally released on PS3, its brilliant story hasn’t been changed in any way. Hell, even the original voice and motion capture recordings are used. The visuals have been meticulously upgraded, though, and the gameplay tweaked to make it smoother and more intuitive. If you have a PC and love action adventure games with compelling stories, you simply need to play this.

34. Marvel’s Midnight Suns
From the creators of XCOM comes a strategy game like other. In Marvel’s Midnight Suns you’re in charge of customising your own hero, The Hunter. As the child of Lilith, who threatens the world with her demonic forces, it’s up to you to work with a range of superheroes from The Avengers, X-Men and Runaways in order to thwart her plans. This isn’t just XCOM with a reskin, though. Jump into it and you’ll find a fast-paced card-based combat system that’s exciting, and between battles you can explore The Abbey and its surrounding areas, building bonds with characters. Needless to say, if you’re seeking out the best single-player games on PC and love Marvel, consider this is a must-play.

35. Persona 5 Royal
The Persona series has won over a legion of fans over the years, but it’s safe to say that Persona 5 has been the most impactful. The good news is that it’s now available on PC. Even better, it’s the Royal version, which includes various gameplay tweaks and additional content. This massive JRPG find players becoming a member of the Phantom Thieves, fighting against injustice in the world. But alongside that, they also need to go about their daily lives, such as socialising with friends, doing jobs and attending classes. With its gripping story and engaging combat system, this is an RPG that you can easily get lost in.
