Best Games Like Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur's Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate 3 has exited Steam Early Access and, quite deservedly, this fantasy RPG is being lapped up by fans of the genre. But just where do you go when you’ve solved your… let’s call it a squid problem? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Here are five games like Baldur’s Gate 3 that you should be next on your to-play list.

We’re also happy to report that while a lot of RPGs tended to end up on the PC, and stay there, every one of these titles is also available on console. Whether you want to battle an ancient dragon god or team up with a talking skull, there’s something here to take your fantasy fancy.

1. Dragon Age Origins

Dragon Age: Origins

  • Available on PC and Xbox (via backwards compatibility)

Dragon Age: Origins, despite the title, doesn’t throw dragon after dragon after you. Instead, you’re fighting a range of other creatures, from demons to orcs – sorry, “darkspawn”. But combat and questing is a joy and you’ll grow to love most of your teammates. It’s from BioWare but this is so more than just fantasy Mass Effect. And we love being able to throw someone else under the bus just before the grand finale.

2. Planescape: Torment

Planescape: Torment

  • Available on PS4, Xbox One and PC

Like Baldur’s Gate 3, this game uses a variation of the Dungeons & Dragon rules. But unlike Baldur’s Gate 3, death is not the end. You play the Nameless One, a walking enigma who cannot be killed but has no memory of his former self. Aside from being an excellent RPG in its own right, it challenges you to decide what truly defines a person.

3. Disco Elysium

Disco Elysium

  • Available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch and PC

Harrier “Harry” Du Bois is as unlikely a hero as you could ask for, a drunk, washed out detective who’s tasked with solving a murder, which goes absolutely swimmingly. We’re kidding, of course. In Disco Elysium, there’s twists aplenty to uncover, in a story that will keep you absolutely hooked. If you’re looking for fantasy combat you won’t find it here but it’s still a real RPG gem.

4. Divinity: Original Sin 2

Divinity: Original Sin 2

  • Available on PS4, Xbox One, Switch and PC

Undoubtedly one of the best games like Baldur’s Gate 3, Divinity: Original Sin 2 is the work of Larian Studios. We described it as “the role-playing experience of your life, “when we reviewed it and, five years later, that sentiment still stands. It’s an engrossing RPG and you don’t lose out much if you’ve not played the previous entry. Is there an overarching narrative to follow? Absolutely, but there’s so much fun to be had wandering around and causing chaos, just to see what happens.

5. Pillars of Eternity

Pillars of Eternity

  • Available on PS4, Xbox One, Switch and PC

Pillars of Eternity teaches you two valuable lessons. One, if you encounter a strange occult ritual you should immediately cover your eyes and stumble in the opposite direction. Two, Obsidian Entertainment may not be working on Fallout: New Vegas 2 but the company’s developers are still masters of their craft.

Aside from the new skills and insights your character has acquired, this RPG features some wonderfully complex situations. You’ll find yourself delving into the truth behind this realm’s stolen souls and upsetting just a few people in the process.

Weekend Editor // Chris has been gaming since the days of the Acorn Electron, which was allegedly purchased to 'help him with his homework'. You can probably guess how well that went. He’ll tackle most genres – football titles aside – though he has a taste for games that that are post-apocalyptic, horror-oriented or thought provoking in nature.
